Why did you choose a career in Home-Based Personal Care?

” I chose this path because I have a deep love for helping and caring for others, especially those who cannot do things for themselves. My passion grew while caring for my son, who has cerebral palsy and epilepsy due to a congenital infection at birth. Raising a child with special needs has been challenging but has also taught me strength, empathy, and compassion. Through my involvement with the Shonaquip Social Enterprise (NPO), which has supported families with disabilities for over 40 years, I’ve learned to share my experiences and empower others. Today, I confidently teach families how to care for and support children living with disabilities.”

In what skills area do you feel most qualified to be a caregiver?

” My key skill areas include personal care and daily living activities, health monitoring, medication management, emotional support and companionship, as well as communication and advocacy.”

What makes you most excited about working with seniors?

I want to build meaningful relationships and make a positive impact in someone’s life. I find joy in witnessing growth and progress while fostering a sense of community and connection. My goal is to find purpose and fulfillment in my work, knowing that I’ve made a real difference in someone’s life.”

What are your main fields of study?

My studies focus on the principles and practices of Home-Based Care, community health, and social support systems. I’ve learned rehabilitative and palliative care techniques, as well as how to support patients in maintaining independence. I’ve also gained experience in holistic care, patient and family education, personal hygiene, communication, and emotional support.”
