Lessons for Building Your Business from Successful Female Entrepreneur Sylvia Klopper

By now, we know how Covid-19 has devastated small businesses, but what about the stories of entrepreneurs who have not only continued operating, but have, against the odds, come out stronger? Home care agency CareChamp is one such business. Here’s co-founder Sylvia Klopper’s insights on what sets CareChamp apart from others.

Do you love what you do?

I love business, and I love investing in social impact. I had an opportunity to combine both when I saw firsthand how important it is for the elderly to be able to age in their own home for as long as possible.

What are you most proud of when it comes to your journey and bringing CareChamp to life?

We’re a customer-first company, so their positive feedback means the world to us. A lot of business comes from referrals and repeat customers, which I take to mean that we’re really making a difference. Along the way, I also had two beautiful babies! In the lockdown, all schools were closed meaning that my youngest came with me to the office. It was then when I really realised how unique our all-female team is. Everyone got involved and pulled together to make it a success. I’m so proud of what we’ve built.

What are the values guiding CareChamp?

Our Champs and team behind the scenes uphold the CHAMP philosophy by being Capable, Honest, Attentive, Mindful, and Pioneering. Being guided by values gives us a solid foundation which we can rely upon in good times and bad, something which really came in handy with the events of 2020.

How is CareChamp different from other home care agencies?

Technology has been crucial in helping us navigate the pandemic. Our platform and app help our clients stay in touch with their caregiver, see what tasks have been completed, and provide feedback—home care has never been more transparent or easier to manage.

How much has CareChamp grown since 2017?

In just short of 4 years, we’ve created more than 100 jobs for the healthcare assistants providing care over our platform—95% of whom are female!

Was CareChamp hit hard with the crisis?

During SA’s lockdown, home care agencies were classified as essential service providers. But just like every other industry, home care has been impacted by the pandemic. With new regulations and guidelines coming our way every day, we had no other option but to innovate and be creative. Luckily, our startup mindset of “let’s reinvent” made it easy for us to adapt and actually be more successful.

What’s your biggest takeaway from the coronavirus pandemic?

We’ve always believed that nothing is more important than trust. And now more than ever, honesty is key to ensuring health and safety. Since client relationships are two-way streets, it’s never been clearer that every successful business needs to know how to communicate effectively.

Do you have any lessons for female entrepreneurs?

For me, it’s all about compartmentalising. I subscribe to the 80-20 rule, where 80% of results will come from just 20% of the action. So, you prioritise the 20% of factors that will produce the best results. You can apply the same rule to every area of your life. As a mother of two young boys, I make every effort to be fully present with my family when I’m outside of the office.

What’s next for CareChamp?

CareChamp is continuously improving, and will be well into the future. In the coming years, we expect to see continued stronger expansion in Gauteng, as well as a greater uptake of our relief and companion care services. Many family caregivers hesitate to ask for help. We want to shine a light on how important taking a break is for both parties, even if it’s just for a few hours. We’re also working on partnering with more value-added services, as well as expanding our range of home care furniture and mobility aids—watch this space!
